Film Awards October 2009

Following many afternoons after school attending Mrs Cosser's Animation Club, some of our Year 6 children (accompanied by some 'old' Year 6 children) submitted their short films into a competition. The theme was 'In a Nutshell' and they had to make a 2 minute animated film on any subject. The film Lego Star Wars received the award for Best Special Effects. This was an incredible achievement as the films were judged by the likes of Miramax (in the US) and Aardman Animations. The children were treated as real stars, arriving in stretch limos and getting properly dressed up for the evening.

Chickens! October 2009

Watch this space to find out their names!

There was huge excitement (which continues) at the arrival of 2 new members of the school - our chickens! There is currently a competition running to name them and children take it in turns to feed them, check their water and bedding and, of course, to collect the eggs! They are former battery hens and are thrilled at their new-found freedom!

Summer Fayre July 2009

The theme for the Summer Fayre this year was 'Circus' and many children (and the odd adult or two) came suitably dressed. It was a tremendously successful afternoon with a final fund-raising figure in excess of £2000. Congratulations and thanks to the Friends of Catcott School and their enormous team of helpers.

Rocket Launch June 2009

This was an amazing opportunity for the children to see a rocket being launched into space from our very own playing field. The rocket had an astronaut in the shape of Micky Monkey (complete with space suit) who went up in the rocket and returned to school safely! There were a couple of false starts which enabled the children to practise their very enthusiastic countdown and then we were treated to the rocket taking off with incredible speed. The short video shows the take off and Micky returning to earth via parachute (which you have to look very carefully to see).

Creativity Week February 2009

As one of our 'special activity' day(s)/week(s) this one was especially prolific in it's range and subject matter. The purpose was to learn about art from different cultures and this certainly led us on a world tour. Despite some hiccups due to snow, all the planned activities were completed and shared during a special assembly. The school hall displays are now full of a wonderful range of art and objects.

Christmas December 2008

Once again, our children excelled themselves at the Christmas Concerts in spite of some terrible coughs and colds and the resulting absences. The theme was 'the colours of Christmas' and meant that each class had it's own colour palette to work from! Reception Class created a charming nativity scene, Year 1 were snowmen, Year 2 were icicles and frost in silvers and blues (with a spectacular coach)! Year 3 were the green of the Holly and the Ivy and Year 4 used orange to represent the Christingle. Year 5 went on a journey to space where they found a special star and finally Year 6 were resplendent in their red costumes as they tried to find the real Father Christmas amongst some imposters.

The staff 'pantomime' on the final morning of term was not very rehearsed but was thankfully short and lots of fun! Some members of staff were very natural actors, particularly Mr Axten-Higgs who took to his role of 'dame' like a duck to water. There was some very poor behaviour plus atrocious wigs and badly applied lipstick - these were only equalled by the rendition of 'Schools Out for Christmas'.

Children in Need October 2008

We decided to bring in as many 10ps as we could find in our money boxes, down the back of the sofa, in our coat pockets and anywhere else we could think of! We had a giant picture of Pudsey and we covered him with our 10ps. Emily in Year 3 made cakes and sold them to her classmates and made £10 all by herself. We made just over £225 altogether so well done to everyone!

Halloween October 2008

There was great excitement in the school as everyone prepared for the Halloween Disco, organised by the Friends and School Council. There were 2 discos, one for each key stage and the costumes were magnificent!

Harvest Festival October 2008

We held our usual Harvest Festival celebrations in the school hall with all the children participating, even Reeption Class children who have only been at school for a few weeks. Donations of groceries were made and these were passed on to Wellfield House in the village.

Very many thanks to everyone for their generosity.

Sports Day July 2008

Fortunately the rain held off and Sports Day took place on Tuesday 15th July. All classes took part in a 'round robin' of events which were followed by a series of very exciting relay races and a 'pre-school' race. Parents then stayed for a picnic on the field. Yellow House won the cup with an amazing points total of 644!

Superschools Visit January 2008

We had a very exciting visit as a result of our participation in the 'Superschools' campaign. Commonwealth medallist Ryan Bradley paid a special visit to the school and thrilled everyone with his gymnastic display. The video shows 6 children and our Headteacher, Mr Ellis, lying on the gym mats and Ryan performing a huge leap over all of them. Ryan is hoping to participate in the Beijing Olympics later this year, providing he can escape injury.

New Playground Equipment November 2007

Everyone is delighted with the fantastic new equipment which we have been able to buy through money raised by Friends of Catcott School and Sainsbury's vouchers.

There are two areas of coloured 'pencils', a train and an extensive 'assault course'. This means there is something to appeal to all ages and the equipment is spread through the playing area, both on the playground and the field.
